During his years as Division Chief and Professor, he trained more African American men and women in Orthopaedic Surgery and taught the specialty to more African American medical students than anyone in the world. The Chair will give lasting institutional and public recognition to Dr. Epps' distinguished career as a medical pioneer, educator, clinician, surgeon, health care administrator, and mentor. Having his name permanently associated with excellence in orthopaedic surgery at Howard University will add prestige to the institution. A Steering Committee has been formed under the enthusiastic leadership of the current Chairman of the Division, Terry L. Thompson, M. D. The Committee has established a goal to raise $2 Million by March, 2003. The interest from the endowment limits will be used annually. In keeping with University policies, examples for use of the funds include salary for a research Fellow, research activities, conferences, meetings, or related travel. The Chair occupant will be a scholar who is recognized for achievement, locally and nationally. |
